Artist vs. Creative: Which One Are You?

Welcome to The Backstage Pass! A Newsletter for Music Artists and Creatives

Are You an Artist or a Creative? Let's Dive In!

HeyReader!

Today, I wanted to explore a topic that I have been thinking a lot about —and one that I think resonates with a lot of us in the creative and performing arts worlds. And that is the difference between being an “artist” and being a “creative.” These terms are often used interchangeably, but there actually are differences. So, let’s dive in!

First of all,

What’s the Difference Between an Artist and a Creative?

1. The Artist
An artist is often deeply connected to a single medium and a singular pursuit: refining their craft and expressing their unique perspective through it. Artists have a dedication to technique and tradition, often pouring their heart into every note, stroke, or line.

Example: Think of a classical pianist who spends hours perfecting the nuances of a Mozart sonata. They’re creating something beautiful, intensely personal, and meant to be experienced for its own sake.

2. The Creative
A creative, on the other hand, might use multiple forms of expression and constantly seek out new ways to communicate ideas or solve problems. Creatives are the boundary-pushers, blending art with innovation and often working across disciplines.

Example: Imagine a designer who merges visual design, branding, and storytelling to create a cohesive experience—or a singer experimenting with both traditional and digital mediums to reach a wider audience.

Where They Overlap

The beautiful thing is that you don’t have to choose one or the other! Many of us fall somewhere in between. We might focus on the technical side of our art like a true “artist,” while also using creativity to innovate and connect with audiences in new ways.

As someone who has experienced both sides—balancing my work as a [musician/vocal coach/designer], I believe that knowing where you fall on this spectrum can help you better understand your goals and your process.

Finding Your Place

So, which side resonates with you more? Whether you see yourself as an artist, a creative, or a blend of both, knowing where you fall can help you build a career that feels authentic and fulfilling.

P.S. If you’re a singer or creative looking to find your unique voice, I’d love to work with you on embracing what makes your artistry special.
